Is a boss key app safe at work?

Short answer: A boss key app only takes programs off the screen: the window, taskbar button and tray icon disappear while the program keeps running. It does not hide anything from your employer's endpoint management, web filtering or activity logs, and neither does gohide. Where it genuinely helps: privacy on your own PC, tidying up before you share your screen, keeping chat apps off a live stream, and lending your laptop to someone. Pick one from a trustworthy source (such as the Microsoft Store) that can also hide tray icons.

Disclosure: gohide is our own app. Its predecessor was GoHide (2019), by the same developer.

What a boss key actually does

When you press the hotkey, the programs you selected:

  • disappear from the screen (not minimized; you can't click them back from the taskbar);
  • lose their taskbar button;
  • lose their tray icon (many older tools can no longer do this on Windows 11);
  • can be muted at the same time.

Press again and everything returns to its original position and size. The programs keep running the whole time.

What it can't do

  • It doesn't hide processes. Task Manager still lists the program.
  • It doesn't get past workplace monitoring. Many company PCs run endpoint management, web filtering or screen recording. Hiding a window doesn't erase launch records or browsing logs. No boss key changes that, and tools that claim "invisible even to monitoring" either can't deliver or are risky software themselves.
  • It doesn't make the window you're using invisible to a recording. Hidden programs are off the screen entirely, so they don't appear in recordings or streams; "visible to me, invisible to the capture" is a different kind of tool (a capture filter).
  • It doesn't change your company's rules.

Where it's genuinely useful

SituationWhat the boss key solves
Sharing your screen in a meetingClear chat apps and game launchers, tray icons included, in one keystroke; restore afterwards
Someone walks up behind youKeep what's on your personal PC private
Streaming with display captureChat windows, taskbar flashes and tray notifications stay off stream
Lending your laptopHide personal apps before handing it over, restore when you get it back
Stepping away from a gameHide and mute it; Pro can also suspend it so it uses no CPU

What to look for

  1. A trustworthy source. Prefer the Microsoft Store, the developer's site or an open-source repository over random download sites.
  2. Tray icons. If the window is gone but the tray icon is still there, nothing is really hidden.
  3. Selected apps vs. everything. Hiding only the apps you choose leaves your work windows alone.
  4. Exact restore. Windows should come back where they were.
  5. Still maintained. Windows changes every year; tools that haven't been updated in years often break on Windows 11.

Setting it up with gohide

  1. Install gohide from the Microsoft Store or the download page. No account, no ads, works offline.
  2. Tick the programs you want to hide. The free version handles 3 programs, with no time limit.
  3. Press Ctrl+Alt+H to hide and Ctrl+Alt+Shift+H to restore. You can change the hotkeys or give a program its own.
  4. Turn on "Mute when hidden" if you need it.

Quitting gohide from the tray always brings every hidden program back.
